Inspiring safety and health in an organisation, one must be aware, leads by example, concern and care thru courses, system, process and best practices that create the safety and health culture in our daily activities. The administrators and governance are the authorities that enable the disciplines and regulations to be implemented and practiced by the participants of the institutions and the long term result is creating the culture within the organisation.    Recent years, injuries and accidents still stand up to be the major issues and these must not be taken lightly.  Sciences and applied studies has managed to change the society well-being and making the daily activities in a comfort and safety environment.  The educational system in Malaysia is making the efforts to support the increment of safety and health awareness on laws and rights of every individual within their living and working space.  The higher education in Malaysia via the courses offered emphasis the issues of safety and health through its curriculum.  This ensuring the Malaysian workforce and future leaders are implying a balance nation development towards the great nation with higher mind set and living standard to the Malaysian scenario by year 2020.  The multinational and international companies are imposing and ensuring that safety policy as priority at workplace. Therefore, it is expected that graduates must be exposed to safety and health matters from beginning of their enrolment until the employment stages in jobs market of various disciplines.  Efforts have been seriously imposed on all engineering field to look at safety issues as the focal point of improvement and methods to increase the living standard of the people is through the higher education systems in this country.

Occupational safety and health awareness is new in Malaysia and the interest in Ergonomics is even newer. As the number of cases related to musculoskeletal disorders arises steadily, more attention on the issues must be considered by the industrial sectors. Although ergonomics issues had been documented in publications and seminars, the priority in assessing, intervening or countermeasures has not been a priority by the industries simply because the vagueness in interpretation of the OSH Act 1994 especially by the OSH practitioners.Currently, most of the evaluation of ergonomics status by the industries is when it became a priority issues such as compensation due to musculoskeletal injuries, compliance of client’s OSH policy or as part of requirement under the company OSHMS. In addition, ergonomics issues had been kept only assessing risk from musculoskeletal disorders and partially on cumulative trauma disorders, while so little attention is given on computer visual syndrome and improvement on the standards of workplace based on the ergonomics principles.In advancing ergonomics, the field must be aligned with the current OSHMP15. It is recommended that new approach by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health must include transformation of the existing law and standards for workplace safety and health. In order to advance, there is need to revised the guidelines on office ergonomics and vibration. In addition guideline on ergonomics assessment must be established and prioritized.

The worldwide use of radioactive materials for medical, industrial, research and other purposes is inextricably associated with risk of radiation exposure to the population. These ionizing radiation sources can pose considerable health risks to affected workers if not properly controlled. Radiation affects people by depositing energy in body tissue, which can cause cell damage or cell death. In some cases there may be no noticeable effect. In other cases, the cell may survive but become abnormal, either temporarily or permanently. Additionally, an abnormal cell may become malignant. Both large and small doses of radiation can cause cellular damage. The extent of the damage depends upon the total amount of energy absorbed, the period and rate of exposure, and the particular organs exposed. The risks can be lessened by reducing any or all of these factors.  The hazard becomes less if there is a shielding material that blocks some of the radiation, or if the person moves farther from the radiation source, or if the exposure time is reduced.General radiation protection recommendations are published, reflecting the increased understanding of the biological basis of radiation-induced tissue damage.  The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommendations provide a ‘System of Radiological Protection’  which is intended to cover all situations involving exposure to ionizing radiation; that is, normal operations where the source is under control, situations where there is a possibility of exposure (accidental and disposal of solid radioactive wastes), and situations where the source is not under control but exposure can be controlled by other means (e.g. radon in homes).In conclusion, radiation risks can be eliminated and radiation does not pose any significant risk to the workers or public if the ionizing radiation sources are properly handled and regulated.

     Zero Harm is about getting every employee, in all working areas, to do their part to eliminate the risk out of what we do every day.  The goal of Zero Harm is to achieve: zero injury or zero hurt among the employees and zero damage or zero defect to the properties.Zero Harm mindset, is not accepting that people have to be hurt in work area and ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity, care and respect. Therefore every employee has to adopt and to believe in it. Adopting Zero harm mindset needs a paradigm shift in employees thinking and behaviour. OSHA’94  describes the General Duty Clause that requires employers to provide plant and systems of work “safe and without risks to health”, as well as employees training that helps workers recognize safety hazards and risk prevention. However, legal compliance alone is not sufficient to achieve the goal Zero Harm. Therefore integrated approach of legal compliance, systems and systematic behavioral program need be enforced. OHSAS 18001 Safety Management System and Behaviors Based Safety (BBS) program shall help Organization achieve the goal of Zero Harm, if successfully implemented and adopted.In striving towards excellence in safety management and practices, and  in driving and sustaining Zero Harm Safety Culture, continuous improvement activities, and  regular management reviews are part and parcels of the success formula .
